What is Engineered Flooring?
Engineered Hardwood Flooring is real hardwood glued to a layer of multi-ply plywood. The plywood is constructed from many thin layers of wood (such as birch) with the grain running in many different directions. This ensures that the final product expands evenly with temperature and humidity, unlike solid wood floors which expand across their width causing un-even expansion and in the worse case cupping and warping.
Other types of Engineered Flooring - be warned
There is another kind of engineerd board you should be aware of. Some manufactureres are producing engineered boards that use 3 ply layer unlike our 11-13 layer ply. The middle layer of the plywood is usually thick layers of wood blocks with gaps between them. This construction has nothing to do with increased stability, it is simply to reduce cost. Often you will find this kind of product has a 2mm hardwood top layer unlike our 4-6mm layer.
Advantages of Engineered Flooring
- Reduced Fitting Time. Due the stability of engineered flooring, planks can be laid without nails or glueing to the subfloor. Instead, engineered floors can be floated in the same way as laminate flooring. Engineered boards can still be glued or nailed if required.
- Never cups or warps. A layer of multi-layer plywood ensures that expansion due to humidity and temperature is minimised, and more importantly is even in all directions.
- Supplied in longer lengths. Typically, engineered boards are longer in length than their solid equivalents - reducing fitting time and ehancing the appearance of the floor
- Ideal for under-floor heating. The enhanced stability of engineered flooring makes it an ideal partner with under-floor heating. Solid wood flooring is not recommended for use with under-floor heating.

Don't assume that because this is engineered wood floor that somehow its inferior to solid wood. Actually its a better product that is more stable that is also suitable to under-floor heating. Features a generous 4mm real white american oak top layer and a highly stable 11-layer plywood back. Installation of this product is also easier because it can be floated like laminate flooring in addition to glue or secret nails. Also features a high quality lacquer and the usual tongue and groove on all sides.
